Our pamphlet idea was fully done when the Core had come to our Second Meeting. he was unhappy with the pamphlet idea as he thought it would serve no good purpose. He thought the idea wouldnt have an impact as most of the people would not read the pamphlets and implement it. So the pamphlet idea was scrapped.

New initiatives were taken in the Second meeting and new work was assigned to all the vols by making them into small teams.

Stickers (designing) – harish,nikhilesh,bidyut.
Stickers with an environmental friendliness idea were to be designed.
Amruth kumar, kavin and nitin – paper bag printing.

Our First meeting to protect the environment!!!!!

We, the Green Teens had kept our first meeting on August 21st. We had discussed a variety of issues and the plan of action that would be taken.
We thought of starting small, by a pamphlet distribution. We fixed the date to be on Sept 4th for the pamphlet distribution, and I made groups of 2 and asked each group to submit one caption and one small paragraph on one Issue. We could easily come up with 7 different kinds of issues, and the green Teens had come up with the following information by the next week August 28th...

rough info -
KILLING trees is a murder
That
Murders the murderer himself
Trees are the most useful things on the earth. So cutting the trees is like cutting the days of our
own life. So plant trees “go green”

Ensure energy conservation
Ensure future generation

How many of us think of the amount of coal or petrol burned while using any form of energy? It’s
the plain fact that energy resources are depleting and simultaneously, needs increasing. Its our due
responsibility to protect the blood of mother earth from being exploited. Can you imagine a world
without energy resources? So, let us work together.

Remember,
Energy conserved IS ENERGY produced.

judicious use of water

Won’t cost you a copper

1.) We use around 680 pounds of paper every year but have no fear , WHEN RECYCLING BINS

ARE NEAR!!!.

DON’T THROW IT AWAY, THROW IT BACK.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

2.) Paper- 6 months

Cigarette butts-2 to 5 months
PET bottles-5 to 10 years
Poly bags-10 to 30 years
Tin can-80 to 10 years
Aluminium can-200 to 400 years, to decompose by itself.
But when in DUSTBIN, it can be managed to recycle in a few weeks.
All we need to do is put it into it.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

3.) Litter – breeds insects, diseases.

- ugliness to scenic environment.
-water poisoning.
*cleaning litter worths 35 per cent of waste management.
‘USE DUSTBINS, DO NOT LITTER’
After reading this, use this paper or throw it in a dustbin.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

4.) Let’s follow the plan-“recycle whatever we can”

Don’t “TRASH” your future just “RECYCLE” it.

Considering that less than one per cent of all the water on the planet is usable fresh water, we are
not nearly so careful as we should be with this resource. Here are some amazing facts to put things
in perspective.

Set in the desert of Dubai, the Tiger Woods golf course uses four a million gallons of water every day
to maintain its lush appearance.

Since 1950, water usage in the United States has risen 127 per cent.

Even though each person only requires 48 liters of water on a daily basis, individuals in the United
States use an average of 500 litres, does in Canada an up average of 300 litres and those in England
and average of 400 litres.

Of all the water that enters each household, about 95 per cent of it ends up down the drain.

with access to just 5 litres of water each day, more than a billion people in water poor regions
around the globe survive on the same amount use to flush the toilet or take a 5 minute shower.

It takes an average of 300 gallons to water your lawn. During the summer, this can account for
almost half of your water usage.

Every time you throw your clothes in the washer, you use about 50 gallons of water.

Another wasteful endeavour, proposed Waveyards water park in Mesa,Arizona will require up to
100,000,000 gallons of underground water every year in an area that receives a mere 8 inches of
rainfall in that time.

THOUGH YOU CAN’T AVOID MOST OF THE ABOVE THINGS TO NOT HAPPEN YOU CAN ATLEAST DO
THE FOLLOWING TO COMPENSATE@@@@@

If you shorten your showers but just a single minute, you can save approximately the same 700
gallons of water in a month.

Turning off the tap when you brush your teeth can save up to 4 gallons every time.

Less than one per cent of all plastics is recycled. Therefore, almost all plastics are incinerated or end
up in a landfill!!!!

Recycling old plastic products uses 20 per cent to 40 per cent less energy from manufacturing it from
new.

It also reduces greenhouse gas emissions.

Why recycle??

Here are some benefits of recycling plastics:

Recycling plastic can be made in to plastic lumber, which is more durable.

Reduces greenhouse gas emissions.

Can be used to make toys, park benches, car Parts, drainage pipes and more.

For every seven trucks it takes to deliver paper bags, it only takes one truck to deliver plastic bags.

Recycled soda bottles can be reused to make fillings for pillows and jackets.

Recycling a single plastic bottle can conserve enough energy to light a 60 watt light bulb for up to 6
hours.

How recycle??

Crush bottles or containers by stepping on them so they take up less room in the bin.

By recycled. Support recycling by looking for products labelled “made with recycled content”. Those
lebeled “made with post consumer recycled content” are products that have been with materials
that have been used, as opposed to raw materials.

Use separate dust bins for recyclable waste like plastics and biodegradable waste like vegetable
waste.

Avoid usage of polythene bags. Carry paper bags or gunny bags.SAY NO TO PLASTICS!!!

Always be responsible for things in your environment.

Green teens

First, what exactly am I talking about??? Who is called a Green teen??
Anyways, we, students of Indian Institute of Technology, Madras have a national organization called National Service Scheme.
Some of the students who are very enthusiastic about saving the environment and the main social causes which concern our nation join this organization. NSS has many divisions under it. And ECG is one of them.
ECG stands for Environmentally Conscious Group. The students of IIT Madras who fall into this group mainly work for the benefit of environment. It again has a subdivision with three other groups.
- Materials and Media
- Student Awareness Program
- Green Teens

Green Teens, earlier called ECOfriends, is the hands of ECG where actual works is done about saving the environment.....

And we hope we do it well this year!!!
